Blogging Everyday in July|A Poem about Someone’s American Dream

I had a friend who really got crushed before I met him.  It seems I tend to meet people in the aftermath.  Maybe because I’m constantly living in the aftermath.
Anyway, he came to mind after he told me his story about losing his American dream that snuck up on him.  He was ready for it, and it suddenly got pulled out from under him, and he’s still reeling in pain, he just hasn’t been able to accept it yet.
But maybe that was a long time ago.  I just felt like today was the time to share this.

Brick house
Picket fence
American dream

Had it all
Crushed in your palm
Can’t find it anymore

In your searching
It won’t be found
Your heart is still drowning

Time to dive into deep waters
Find yourself
Though this all is terrifying

Pull out your heart
Resurrection
What was lost will find you

It is far too easy
To be swallowed by anger
Especially with reason

You can’t just go back
To the way things were
The future lays ahead

Pride destroyed
Soul exposed
Let time heal you

It’s not fair in the moment
But someday you’ll look back
And smile

With your brick house
Picket fence
More than just a dream

Nobody’s Story

Nobody’s story is simple
To get to where you are now had to come from somewhere
Even growing in perfection has moments of misdirection
Every stained glass had its broken moments

The one who has it all together had to learn to stretch to wrap their arms around the broken years
The one who shines so brightly in the light has trouble falling asleep at night because of fear of darkness
The early riser, morning conqueror never fell asleep in the first place
The one so quiet and concentrated has learned to gather scattered thoughts to keep from going crazy

We try to put everyone in a box
Believing no one can understand
That everyone’s life must be easy
Because you can watch them breathe while you feel as though you’re suffocating

Things don’t go to plan
Because the chaos of the universe already has its order
As we try to grasp it we fall apart
Developing a story to be told

Nobody’s story is simple
To get to where you are now had to come from somewhere
So tell it

Torrential Downpour

I was caught in a torrential downpour
Though only for a moment
Now understanding
This calm after the storm

Nothing has ended
In this new beginning
The rain has made this all new
Bask in this
Be refreshed
If only for a moment

Drink it all in
Drown in it
Because you are not drowning
Take this and swim in it

Found myself caught in a torrential downpour
Thought I was stuck in this moment
Thought I’d left my blue skies behind me
I am calm here
In this storm

Stop

Stop
For a moment
Take a deep breath
And remember

He has your back
He goes before you
He holds your hand
As he is guiding you

He is your light
In every dark place
Even when you close your eyes
He is with you

You may be walking
Through the Valley
Of the Shadow of Death
But there is nothing left to fear

You are coated
In armor
Of his holiness
Nothing is out to get you

He is ready
And waiting
For you to leave your fears
Behind you

Diving in headfirst
As you follow him
With every episode
You feel yourself fall away

But you are drawing closer
This is not a mountain
And you’ve already climbed it
You have made it

So stop
For a moment
And breathe
Because he is with you

Afraid

I see it in your eyes
Hear it in your voice
Find myself alarmed
Because I’ve seen it all before
Only in myself

Terrified of what it might do to you
You push me away
Telling me you don’t feel what you feel
We are not what we are
Only figments
Of imagination

I asked for nothing
When you begged for something
Couldn’t push me to stay
As I tried to leave anyway

You latched onto me and held me tight
Now every night turns into a fight
As  you tell me to leave
Then expect me to stay the night

You are running away from me
Still accusing me of running
As I prepare myself for leaving
So I don’t fall

But why can’t we fall?
If only for a moment?
As our timing is off
Let me have this moment
Because a moment with you
Could be worth it

Can we let go?
Of this fear?
I don’t want to be afraid anymore
I just want you

Shaken

I was shaken
Today
The hills reached out and grabbed me
Tried to strangle me
And I felt it

I could have stayed there
Frozen in time
Forgetting my purpose
Yet only for a moment
As I was drawn in

Yet I escaped
I believe
So I’m here now
Not myself
But someone, still

So I pray
Finding something else
As I’m lost in a new adventure
Hearing stories
Losing my own
